Moving Beyond Core Exercises To Relieve Your Low Back Pain

August 12, 2024

Low back pain is one of the most common conditions we see in our Boulder Physical Therapy and Lafayette Physical Therapy clinics.  Our experts utilize manual therapy including spinal manipulation, dry needling, and high level exercise to help patients return to 100%.  Tests are performed to see which specific muscles in the core are strong and which ones require targeted exercises to reduce symptoms are help facilitate a return to lost activities.  Initially core exercises are prescribed to restore lost strength or endurance of the musculature of the spine.  As patient’s symptoms are reduced and function is restored it is important to transition exercises into multi joint movements that both strengthen the core and the larger extremity muscles.

We aim to have patients transition to six general categories of exercise listed below.  Selecting an exercise from each category based on ability level and access to equipment.   Participants are encouraged to perform 3 sets of 10-12 reps from each category, 2-3 days per week.  We have found this program allows patients with low back pain to return to 100% and most importantly reduce their risk of their symptoms returning.  Contact the experts at MEND to determine which exercises are best for your symptoms.
