Can Pelvic Floor Strengthening With A Physical Therapist Help With Low Back Pain

August 28, 2024

Low back pain is the most common condition seen by primary care physicians and Physical Therapists.  Although prevalent, low back pain can be a challenge to treat due to the different presentations of patients with this condition.  In our Boulder Physical Therapy and Lafayette Physical Therapy clinics we accurately identify the presentation type with a thorough subjective and objective examination.  The vast majority of patients treated by Physical Therapists will perform exercises, often in conjunction with manual therapy such as spinal manipulation and dry needling, to eliminate their back symptoms.  One indicated form of exercise includes core strengthening or stability exercises which may include pelvic floor musculature.  A recent review of the literature describes the effectiveness of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy exercises for patients with low back pain.

Kazeminia and colleagues published their review of the research literature on the impact of pelvic floor strengthening for patients with low back pain (Neurol Sci. 2022).  Authors included 19 randomized controlled trials of 456 patients wit low back pain.  They reported decreased low back pain symptoms in both the general population as well as post partum populations.  Authors noted research quality and impact scores have increased in recent years indicating an increase in publications, quality of research, and effective prescription of the exercises.
